Fire Department – Grant Township

Grant Township

Fire Department

Fire Department Information

Up to thirty women and men provide Fire, Rescue and Medical First response coverage 24-7 to the area of Grant TWP and provide mutual aid to other townships / municipalities.

The dedicated personnel responding to emergencies respond from their homes in their personal vehicle either direct  the scene or to the township fire hall. Those responding to the hall are accessing and bringing vehicles, and equipment  required at the scene.

The Grant Township Fire Hall is located at 7942 Wildcat Rd, Grant Township, MI 48032.

Note: The personnel work a normal job to support their families. Sleep, family meals – gatherings, birthday parties, holidays are often interrupted. In addition some personnel respond from work and may lose vacation time or forfeit pay to answer needs of local emergencies.

Origins

In 1947 by majority vote of the people in Grant Township asked the Township Board to purchase a fire apparatus.

An international truck chassis with a John Bean high pressure fog, with water supply tank, capacity of four hundred and thirty gallons. One set of twelve-foot extension ladders and roof ladder, one set of fourteen-foot extension ladders and foot ladder, and two pic head axes, for the sum of $7,645.00.

The new fire apparatus was delivered in November 1947. Three residents (Grant Burch Jr., Orrington Newberry, and Wesley Strevel) of Grant Township attended a fire school in Lansing Mich. Instruction was given on the fundamentals of firefighting, the mechanics of this unit, and practical experience fighting various types of fires with high pressure.

The fire department was organized by Grant Burch Jr. assisted by Orrington Newberry, and Wesley Strevel, thus was established in December 1947.
